Katie Kerr

Mixed Media Artist

Katie Kerr is a mixed media artist from Denver, Colorado. She studied graphic design at Northeastern University, with a focus on experience design. While at college, she also got involved with public art on campus, and created two different murals (one in color in acrylic paint, and one in black and white in Sharpie), as well as a set of vinyl elevator door wraps that rotated through campus buildings for 8 months, and an interactive public mural for a commencement ceremony.  Katie originally planned to study biology before finding her calling in art, design, and laser cutting, but still incorporates natural and biological influences in her art. Her black and white ink illustrations are abstract, but their organic styles and systems suggest references to cell biology, microbiology, ecology, marine life, and the human body. No matter the scale, many different organic systems work in harmony to create a panorama of organized chaos, and everybody can take away different interpretations of her work.

During her college years, she also discovered makerspaces and laser cutting, and has been creating original laser-cut designs for almost a decade. Currently using a makerspace in Fort Collins, she creates her own designs to laser-cut. Beyond coasters, trivets, and magnets, she is looking to expand her products to jewelry, wall art, window hangings, etched glasses, and more.  CUSTOM WORK: You can customize your own plaque, sign, coaster set, trivet, magnet set, keychain, etched glassware, etched photos, and more. Materials available to cut include wood, colored acrylic, paper, cardboard, and leather. Materials available to etch include all those to cut, as well as glass (including drinking glasses and some wine bottles), tile, and metal. LASERCUTTING: Lasercutting is a type of digital fabrication, where a laser cutter uses power and speed specifications to run the laser to cut into or etch onto a material. It creates highly detailed, exact, reproducible designs with very little effort by the artist. Lasercutting is accessible to anyone – all you need is a digital file, the right settings for your material, and some patience.
