Indigo Gerdin is a glassblower based in Crawford, Colorado, where she owns a glass studio with her husband, Martin Gerdin. Together, they own and operate Gerdin Glass, primarily making wildlife and fish sculptures by Martin’s design. Indigo is entirely taught by Martin, only finding her love of hot glass after meeting it through him. Indigo began assisting Martin shortly after they met in 2020 and has become crucial to the color preparation and assembly processes of their fish sculptures.
Currently studying with Martin, she aims to perfect her techniques, find her style, and make her own line of work. Much of her work is a representation of her growing skills in this challenging art form. Her cups; an effort in consistency. Her mushrooms: a display of heat control. Her pumpkins: a study in controlled speed and accuracy. Glass is a cruel mistress. Pieces are only 30 seconds from failure for the duration of the process, which sometimes stretches to 5 hours. There is a constant dialogue between the artist and medium. Counterintuitive in nature, part of the battle is learning to work with the glass instead of fighting it.
